Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Women’s Health, Body & Awareness
Every October, the world comes together to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Closely associated with the pink ribbon, this month goes beyond being a global awareness campaign; it serves as an important reminder to talk about breast cancer, early detection, regular check-ups and women’s health.
Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer globally in 2024, while around 694,000 people lost their lives to the disease. Breast cancer affects women in every country and particularly when detected early and treated in a timely manner, outcomes can be significantly improved.
This is why one of the most important messages of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is simple: Awareness is the first step towards taking action early.

How Did Breast Cancer Awareness Month Begin?
The pink symbols and campaigns we see around the world every October are part of an awareness movement that has evolved over many years.
The foundations of Breast Cancer Awareness Month were laid in 1985. The first campaign, launched by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries, then a pharmaceutical company, initially began as a week-long educational campaign focused on the importance of breast cancer screening and mammography. Over time, the initiative grew into a global awareness movement spanning the entire month of October.
The pink ribbon gradually became one of the movement’s most recognizable symbols. In 1991, Susan G. Komen distributed pink ribbons to participants at the Race for the Cure event in New York, helping establish the ribbon as a widely recognized symbol of breast cancer awareness.
Today, the color pink is closely associated with hope, solidarity, awareness and women’s health.
Why Is Breast Cancer Awareness So Important?
The purpose of breast cancer awareness is not simply to talk about the disease. It is also about encouraging women to become more familiar with their breast health, recognize possible changes and seek professional medical advice when necessary.
The World Health Organization highlights two important components of early detection: being aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and having access to appropriate screening programs. Early detection and timely treatment play an important role in reducing breast cancer mortality.
It is important for every woman to become familiar with her breasts and understand what is normal for her. Changes such as a new lump in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, skin changes, changes to the nipple or unusual discharge should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
It is also important to remember that not every change is a sign of cancer, but unusual changes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
When it comes to screening, factors such as age, personal and family history and other individual risk factors should be considered. Women should therefore follow medical guidance regarding which screenings are appropriate and when they should take place.
The Role of Fashion and Beauty Brands in Raising Awareness
Over the years, breast cancer awareness has grown beyond the work of healthcare organizations and non-profit institutions to become a global movement in which fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands also play an active role.
With their broad communication networks, communities and creative storytelling capabilities, brands can help important health messages reach wider audiences.
One of the most recognized examples is Ralph Lauren’s Pink Pony initiative. Launched in 2000, Pink Pony has grown into a global initiative connecting the fashion world with cancer awareness and support for cancer care. Over the years, the brand has supported cancer care, early detection and awareness through special collections, products, store activations and various communication initiatives.
In the beauty industry, the Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Campaign, launched in 1992, has also become a significant example of supporting the visibility of the pink ribbon, as well as research, education and awareness initiatives. Over the years, the campaign has used products, global communications and symbolic landmark illuminations to help raise awareness.
These examples demonstrate that the role of brands in social causes can go beyond simply using a color or symbol. When products, storytelling, community and communication come together, awareness can become more visible and reach wider audiences.
Moeva’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month Initiative: Raising Awareness Through Design

At Moeva, we believe in empowering women to feel strong, free and confident. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are choosing to approach the month not simply through the color pink, but through awareness, solidarity and support for women.
As part of this initiative, we are reimagining Honora, one of Moeva’s iconic swimsuits, in a special pink color created for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Reflecting Moeva’s signature approach to luxury swimwear and women’s swimwear, Pink Honora combines a strong silhouette with functional details designed to offer women a confident experience.
Moeva’s design philosophy extends beyond swimwear. Through our resort wear and luxury resort wear collections, we create timeless pieces designed to accompany women through different moments, from holidays and coastal escapes to city life. This approach also lies at the heart of our women’s resort wear philosophy: strong silhouettes, distinctive details and designs that adapt to different needs.
In this special version, Honora was also designed to draw attention to the different needs of women living with breast cancer or continuing their lives after breast cancer treatment.
One of the key features of the design is that it can be worn with removable breast prostheses.
For us, this is more than a technical design detail. We believe that a fashion piece should be able to respond to different needs, create space for women to feel comfortable and confident, and adapt to individual experiences.
For Moeva, design is not only about how we look, but also how we feel. Honora reflects this philosophy by bringing together the aesthetics of luxury swimwear with functionality and a women-centered approach to design.
Fashion, Confidence and the Freedom to Express Yourself
When designing for women’s bodies, we believe it is important to consider different bodies, life experiences and individual needs.
Following breast cancer treatment, a woman’s relationship with her body may change. Surgical procedures and treatments can affect not only physical appearance, but also the way a woman chooses her clothing and expresses herself.
For this reason, fashion can be seen as more than an aesthetic space; it can also be a means of confidence, identity and self-expression.
Moeva’s special pink design for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reflection of this perspective. Its compatibility with removable breast prostheses is intended to allow the design to adapt to different needs.
The message we want to share through this piece is not simply about creating a pink product:
Every woman deserves to feel free in her own body, her own story and her own strength.
Pink October: From Awareness to Action
Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings the conversation into focus through the color pink. Yet the true value of awareness lies in turning that visibility into conscious action in everyday life.
Knowing your own breast health, paying attention to changes in your body, following health checks according to your individual risk factors and medical guidance, and seeking professional support when needed are all important parts of awareness.
The World Health Organization also emphasizes the importance of early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive treatment in breast cancer. Through its Global Breast Cancer Initiative, WHO identifies early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive breast cancer management as key areas of action.
October can serve as an important reminder. But awareness of breast health should extend far beyond a single month.
At Moeva, as we continue creating designs that accompany women through different stages of their lives and support them in feeling strong, free and confident, we also want to use our own creative world to support the message of this month.
More than a color. A reminder.
A reminder to take greater care of ourselves, our bodies and one another; to grow awareness and to be part of a community where women support and empower each other.
