International Women’s Day: An Interview with our Creative Director - Moeva

International Women’s Day: An Interview with our Creative Director

For this year’s International Women’s Day, we are bringing Moeva's creative director Burcu Tanman to share her inspirations, experiences, and perspective as a woman in the fashion industry.

‘Mo’ stands for brave and powerful, “Eva” is the first woman created. What does the idea of a strong woman mean to you?

My idea of a strong woman is someone who is proud of her body and accepts herself as she is, with her strengths and weaknesses. She can survive alone, doesn't depend on anyone physically or emotionally. She leads and doesn't follow.

How would you describe your designs?

Eye-catching, versatile, daring yet elegant designs.

How do you create a collection, how is your creative process?

My creative process starts with researching. I search for new trends and focus on how to adapt them to Moeva. I write a story, dream of a woman, and finally start sketching.

Who was your inspiration behind the Pampelonne collection?

‘40s,’50's French Riviera was my main inspiration for the collection since it’s the golden era for beachwear, and my personal favorite. Settings, parties, beaches, and people were all in their most elegant state. It was the playground for the rich and famous, therefore everything was designed accordingly. Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, and Grace Kelly were the main muses of the collection. I have also been inspired by Slim Aarons’ photographs.

What story are you telling about the women who wear your designs from SS21 Pampelonne?

Imagine a place with palm trees along the coastline, with magnificent hotels and casinos, most elegant parties filled with the most beautiful people. This is where I would like to take you with your swimwear this summer.

What message do you try to communicate to women through your designs?

Women are naturally designed to be loved and admired. They are all as beautiful and special as they are. I want to embrace their femininity with my designs since it is the most precious gift.

What advice would you give other young women designers hoping to make it in the fashion world?

Work hard and work harder, success is never a coincidence.

How can women help to empower each other more?

First, they need to accept and love themselves. A happy, determined, and self-accepting woman can make the world a better place. I always believe that women will rescue this world.

What is your favorite Moeva design, how would you style it?

My favorite design of the season is Kimberley. I can imagine myself hitting the beach wearing it, along with Josie headband and Devin shades.

The new collection is coming up and we’re all so excited! Can you give us a hint about it?

All I can say is you are very right to be excited :)
